More About Sedation Dentistry

sedation dentistry

Are you extremely afraid of the dentist? Well, you don’t have to anymore thanks to safe, effective sedation dentistry from Pleasant Valley Smile Studio.

Sedation dentistry offers a way for patients to relax and feel comfortable during dental appointments. There are options. Talk to us.

By opting for sedation dentistry in a pill format, you can now have your dental care accomplished while you are totally relaxed and comfortable. Oral sedation allows our dentists to alleviate the patient’s dental anxiety. As a patient you will feel deeply relaxed and chill, but are still awake during the procedure. Many patients say they remember very little of their appointment. This type of sedation can be taken in the hours prior to the appointment so they can relax without letting feelings of panic or anxiety set in.

For greater levels of sedation, we work closely with board certified anesthesiologists of the Horizon Anesthesia Group (part of the Reston Hospital Anesthesia Group) so we can offer full sedation (general anesthesia) for patients who wish to be completely asleep during their dental treatment. If general anesthesia is used in your appointment, rest assured you will be in excellent hands since we monitor all of your vital signs (heart function, respiration, consciousness, pulse, blood pressure, temperature) to ensure your comfort and safety.

Sedation and anesthesia gives patients the option to be completely comfortable without experiencing high anxiety or a fear of the dentist.

We offer several sedation options including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and IV sedation. Nitrous oxide provides mild relaxation that wears off quickly, making it ideal for shorter procedures and patients with mild anxiety. Oral sedation involves taking prescribed medication before your appointment for moderate sedation, perfect for longer treatments or moderate anxiety. IV sedation delivers the deepest level of conscious sedation for complex procedures or severe dental phobia. During your consultation, we'll discuss your anxiety level, medical history, and treatment needs to recommend the most appropriate option.

Yes, sedation options are available for virtually any dental procedure if anxiety affects your ability to receive care. Many patients with dental phobia benefit from sedation even during routine cleanings and exams. Regular preventive care is crucial for maintaining oral health and preventing more complex issues, so we prioritize making these appointments comfortable. We'll work with you to find the appropriate level of sedation based on your anxiety level and the procedure being performed. Our goal is to help you receive the dental care you need without stress or discomfort.

Getting a dental bridge is typically not painful. Your dentist will numb the area during the preparation and placement to keep you comfortable. Some patients may experience mild sensitivity or soreness afterward, but this usually resolves within a few days.
